Yikes!! I apologize but I never sent home any literature about Grandparents Day which is THIS Friday. Thanks to a parent who asked because she saw that her other child's teacher was more on the ball. (I could make excuses... okay I will... the handout I was given was on red paper and when I tried to copy it it came out illegible - my good intentions of rewriting it and copying that never occurred). If your child's grandparent would like to come please let me know. I would like grandparents during the morning session, there is a presentation, our music class and then our Math class. If grandparents would like to come, let me know and I will give you the particulars. (Be warned, I will put them to work!)
Friday is also Dream Job Day. Students and staff will dress up as what hey would like to be when they grow up. Since I already have my dream job, this is always the hardest Spirit Day for me.
This past week we have had two assessments, one in Math and one in Reading. I will be sending these home soon so you can see how your child did. Please sign and return them. I was very happy with the Math results. Although not every student scored as high as I would have liked, when I went over the test with them, I could see what mistakes were made and was happy that, even though the mistakes were made, almost everyone understood our underlying concepts.
In our Reading Assessment which we finished today, students were read 3 stories and had to answer comprehension questions. Students read sentences by themselves and had to plug in High Frequency Words and had to identify phonics patterns in words.
This week we will be starting our reteach and enrichment units in Language Arts and, next week we will expand to Math. Mrs. Breeding, Mrs. Aldas and I will split our class with the majority of students going for enrichment activities while those students who were have problems mastering the material will be retaught the skills. These groupings will be made on a week by week basis using current formative assessments.
Our end of the 1st Marking Period is October 28. Parent conferences will be the week of November 7 with evening conferences on Wednesday. There are only a few evening spots so, if at all possible, please plan to meet during the afternoon on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday November 7, 8 or 9.. Sign up sheets will be coming home soon.
Our field trip is on November 4th. Thanks to all the parents who volunteered to be chaperones. Unfortunately only two could be chosen and this was done by pulling names out of a hat.
Any questions, comments or concerns please let me know!
Thanks,
Dave Ostheimer
