By the beginning of next week, I will have administered a "running record" of your child's reading. I am looking for your child to read 1st grade appropriate text at 15 words per minute or better with one mistake or less for every 10 words . As we work on fluency throughout the year, the State of Delaware has a target of 60 words per minute by the end of May with one mistake or less per every 30 words. A self correction does not count as a mistake. If you read the optional handout with your child, it will help them with their word recognition and fluency.
This week in Language Arts we are discussing the Beginning Middle and End of stories to help students with their comprehension. We are also working on words that end with -ck. In Writing, we are working on our 1st "major" writing piece, a paragaraph about "me". In Math we will delve more deeply into story problems. How do we know what the question is asking us to do? How do we solve the answer and how do we show we have the answer. The steps I am teaching fotr addition are, find the numbers, make pictures (tally marks are preffered but pictures are acceptable), add the pictures/tally marks, write your number sentence. Be sure to use a + and an =.
In Science we will discuss Autumn and start our study on clouds and in Social Studies on Friday, we will talk a bit about Johnny Appleseed whose birthday is on Sunday!
