This week we head straight into the curriculum.
In Reading, we will be working on Short a sounds, as in "cat", and reading our first stories. We will be learning the strategies that all good readers do when they come upon words they don't know. We will also be learning our reading comprehension skills, this week working on making predictions as to what we think might happen next in a story. We'll be learning our rules for our Reading centers and learning to play some basic reading games. These next two weeks, students will also be assessed as to what they learned (and remembered) from kindergarten. These assessments will help me target specific reading goals for your child.
In Math, we will be working with counting and with numbers. How do we count items? How do we know we have the correct number? Do we or should we organize items when we count? These are all questions that we will ask as the week progresses. Of course it wouldn't be the beginning of school without more assessments so I will be assessing math skills as well.
In Social Studies we are still concerning ourselves with school rules, classroom rules and being a good citizen.
This week I am also instituting the "behavior chart". I realize that the students are 6 years old and I have expectations that I feel are appropriate for a 6 year old. For more information on this please come to our Open House on September 19. Please sign the paper that you find on the back of your child's folder and return it the next day.
Have a great week!
