The winter holidays are upon us and we are learning about celebrations around the world. Last week we learned about St. Nicholas Day which is celebrated in, among other places, Holland, Germany and Northern Italy. This week we will learn about Hanukkah, St. Lucia Day, Eid, Diwali and Kwanza. Does your family celebrate a holiday that you would like to share with the class? Please let me know.
In Reading, we will read the myth of King Midas and discuss the story element of setting, when and where does a story take place. We will also learn the digraph /sh/ and review /th/ and the initial blends with l, s and r.
In Math, we will work on subtraction. Last week we worked on addition using the strategy of counting on. For this strategy, you put the larger number in your head and count on the smaller number. If I had 5 cookies and you gave me 7, how many cookies do I have now? You would put the 7 (larger number) in your head and count on 5 more (8, 9, 10, 11, 12). The answer is 5+7=12. When showing your work, the student should write 5 tally marks (or circles) and then number them starting with 8 and going up to 12.
l l l l l 5+7=12 This shows me that they counted on.
8 9 10 11 12
The student can also write a sentence like "I put 7 in my head, counted on 5 more and got 12."
Thanks and have a great week!
