This week we will be continuing our work on long vowel sounds! Last week we did long a as found in /ai/ and /ay/, this week we will encounter that sneaky silent e (a_e)! Last week we continued with cause and effect and this week we will look at problem and solution. We will also be having another oral reading fluency passage. I am hoping that students will be above 35 wcpm. The passages we have been reading have been difficult, but, I hope this practice will enable greater fluency in the future. In Math, we are continuing our study of measurement. We measure with non-standard units in 1st grade so, instead of rulers, we use feet. We will also be introduced to measuring with standard units. In your child's folder you should have found flashcards for addition using numbers 1-9. By the end of 1st grade, students should be fluent, if not automatic, with their addition facts. This will make 2nd grade math much easier when students are adding 2 digit numbers and above as well as working with "doubles".
I found a website that organizes many links by subject. We have been looking at the Math links in class and students have asked that I make it available so, here it is:

Thanks to Laura Brace at Bancroft Elementary school for finding this link and putting it on her site.
In Science we are finishing up solids and liquids. Remember, an important main idea is that solids retain their shapes (unless acted upon such as being cut or broken) and liquids take the shape of their container.
Friday is "Time Warp Day". Students should dress up in outfits reminiscent of an earlier time period. Be 60's groovy, disco 70's, skinny tie 80's or grungy 90's. Not sure how I'm going to dress since I'm trying to forget all those fashion nightmares, not relive them!
Below are some pictures from the classroom including the 100th day of school and Mathmania!
Tuesday is Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and Carnival in many other Latin countries. During Social Studies we will learn a little about that custom and maybe even make some carnival masks while we listen to some funky New Orleans Jazz!
Laissez les bons temps rouler!! (Let the good times roll!)
