I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I am going to continue with the homework packets as all the comments I had about them were favorable. This week your child will be assessed on their High Frequency Words. The words are those they should have learned in Kindergarten and those that they have learned in Themes 1 and 2 in 1 st grade. I have sent a copy of Theme 1 and 2 words home in your child's folder for practice. The students need to read each word correctly within 2 seconds, they should not sound out the words but just say them.
This week in Reading we will be working with the short o sound as in "pot". We will also discuss "characters" as we start to put together all the elements that make up a story. Focusing on the beginning, middle and end and the characters in a story will help us as we work on our story comprehension. Many students, when they are done reading a story, don't know what it is that they have read. They have read the words, sounded them out but have yet to put the sounds of the word and the meaning of the word together. That is what we are beginning to do in 1st grade and will continue to do in 2nd. When your child reads to you (or you to him or her) ask what is happening, who is the story about, what they think will happen next. These questions will help your child think about what is happening in the story and aid in their comprehension.
In Writing, the students have written sentences about themselves, we will edit the sentences and, if time permits, make an autobiography of our class.
In Math, we are continuing our work with numbers, which comes before another, when we write them, are they correct? We will continue with word problems and number sentences and will soon start coming up with all the different combinations to make a certain number (1+9=10, 2+8=10,......8+2=10, 9+1=10). We are also working on coin identification and how much each coin is worth.
In Science, we continue with weather, specifically clouds and, if the weather cooperates, measuring rainfall.
Thursday 9/30 at 6:00 is Math Night. we will discuss the different games that we play that will help your child develop his or her number sense and Math skills. If you would like to attend and did not get a form, please email me your interest.
Thanks for reading!!
