This is a big week for us. First, on Monday, we have the buy one get one free book fair during library (10:15-11:00). The Blue Rocks reading challenge bookmarks are due back on Monday, as well. On Tuesday, we have our field trip to see Junie B. Jones and on Thursday, it is dress up day - everyone dresses up in their finest clothes (but please remember, we have gym and recess so make sure that you send sneakers in, as well).
We have 6 more school days days in the 5th Marking Period, 9 more school days until Spring Break and only 33 more school days of 1st grade!
In Reading, we will be working on the vowel sound /ow/ as in how and out. We will also be working on the forms of be as in am, is and are. We will continue working on our Fluency and our Comprehension trying to read 60 words per minute on a 1st grade level text (or 40 wpm on our Dibels assessment) with no errors and retelling what we've read.
In Writing we will finish up our Animal Report and will discuss what kinds of project we might do with them.
In Math we will continue with our skip counting and pattern discussion. It is very important that your child be able to skip count from any number using the 100 chart I sent home last week. They should be able to start on any number on the chart and, using the chart, add another number repeatedly and tell you the sum. For example 3+5=8, 8+5=13, 13+5=18 and so on.
In Science we are well into our organisms unit. Unfortunately, like every living thing, many of our guppies have died. This is part of their life cycle and this concept is an important part of the unit. How do you know something is alive? It needs food, water, shelter, air (oxygen/carbon dioxide), can reproduce and dies. Our short lived guppies also means that your child will probably not be able to take home a fish.
Our plants have also started to sprout, again only about 1/4, as of Friday had shown any signs of live. If there are nor roots or hoots tomorrow we will replant and try again.
Have a great week!
