This week we will continue learning about silent e and how it changes short vowel sounds to long vowels sounds. We will also continue with our reading comprehension strategies of problems and solutions. In writing we will continue working on descriptions, how things look, feel, sound, taste and how many things there are.
In Math, we will continue our work on measurement. This week we will concentrate on comparing different units of measurement, why do we get one number when we use a smaller unit and another when we use a larger unit? In class we have been going over coins, time to the 1/2 hour and place value - 10s and 1s. These are crucial concepts for 2nd grade so please review them now and again. Ask your child to count your change that is less than $1.00 (you may need to help if you have more than 1 quarter), when the time is on the hour or 1/2 hour, ask them to tell you the time, and when you see a number like 57, ask them how many 10s are in 57 and how many ones.
In Science, we will be getting ready to start our new unit on Organisms (a personal favorite) and in Social Studies we will continue with some Black History Month activities.
On Friday, we will be celebrating Read Across America Day. Mrs. Aldas, Mrs Breeding and I will all have activities based on a favorite Dr. Seuss book and we will rotate to all three classrooms to work on those activities. It should be a lot of fun!
Also, on Friday, we will be welcoming two new students to our classroom. Our two new students are from the University of Delaware and are studying to become elementary school teachers. They will be with us for 3 weeks spread out over March and April.
Thank you to everyone who addressed and returned an envelope, we will be writing our letters and mailing them off soon! I can't wait to see what responses we get!
Finally, I know that students will be disappointed when they come in and I no longer have my supercool mustache and sideburns from Time Warp Day. my wife threatened to not talk to me again and my daughter, Luci, to disown me unless I shaved. Rory was the only one in the family supporting my freedom of expression.
Have a great week,
Dave Ostheimer
