Today we finished our 101 st day of school!
In Reading, we are working more on cause and effect, the long a sound as in day and pail (ay and ai) and phrasing when we read for fluency. (Look for some fluency passages coming home soon!) In Writing, we will continue to write with details. Instead of writing: "The dog barked.", we will write "The big dog barked loudly in the backyard.". We will brainstorm some favorite places and then write a paragraph description of "My Favorite Place".
In Math we are still measuring. Last week we measured with cubes and tiles, this week we will measure with kid steps, baby steps and basketball player steps. On Friday, if all goes well, we will finish up our unit on measurement.
In Science, we are almost done with Solids and Liquids. Remember solids and liquids are two states of matter. For our purposes, matter is any thing that takes up space. Ask your child how solids and liquids are the same and how they are different. The most important idea is that solids keep their shape and liquids take the shape of their container.
For the month of February, in Social Studies, we will learn about African American History. We will touch a little on slavery, segregation and Civil Rights and some scientific discoveries and inventions made by African Americans as well contributions to popular culture in sports, the arts and music. Yes, the music at recess might get a little bit funky.
Next Monday is Valentine's Day. I will set aside some time after lunch to exchange valentines. There will be a list of students in the class sent home Tuesday. If your child is giving out valentines, please make sure there is one for every student so no one's feelings get hurt! If you do not want your child to participate, let me know ASAP.
Thanks!
