This week we finish the 5th Unit of our Language Arts curriculum and have our end of theme test this Friday. We will continue to work on drawing conclusions from our reading, using punctuation to help us read fluently and our phonics skills of long vowels (vowel, consonant, silent e).
For St. Patrick's Day on Thursday, I will be reading some Irish folktales.
In Writing, we will be writing a fantasy story based on the Irish legends of the leprechauns. As always, I will be looking for the proper use of spacing between words, capitals and punctuation. Students must also write at least 6 sentences that make sense (they have all the words the student means to have in them) and they must stay on topic with their stories.
In Math we will be working on story problems. How do we know if we need to add or subtract? Did we show our work? Did we get the right answer? How can we check? Our end of unit assessment is coming up as well as our district assessment on Units 4,5 and 6.
In Social Studies, we will finish with our Unit on Economics - Goods and Services, Needs vs. Wants and, if time allows, in Science we may do a mini-unit on the moon to go with our Magic Tree House book we read last Marking Period.
Some important information: In your child's folder you should find a Math Assessment on making 10. The rubric was 9 ways EP, 8-6 ways MP, 5,4 ways NP less than 4 BP. While 10+0 does equal 10, the question clearly states that there are some red crayons and some blue crayons so there are only 9 ways to make 10. Please sign the paper and return it.
On Wednesday, March16, we will be having a "Hat Day" to collect money for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Any child who donates any money towards this cause will be able to wear their hat all day in school. Donations will be collected and sent to the Red Cross.
Thursday is St. Patrick's day - don't forget to wear green!
Friday is a Spirit Day and students are encouraged to wear any Disney themed clothing or costumes they may have.
Also in your child's folder is the permission slip for our field trip to see a production of Junie B. Jones. There is room for two chaperones. The cost is $8 for children and $8 for adults. I will be picking the chaperones from those parents/guardians's who have returned $8 by Friday morning March 18. If you are not picked, I will return your $8 with your child.
Our class is 3 compliments away from earning 100 for the year! When we reach this goal we will be having a celebration in the classroom (probably this Friday after our assessment). We will vote on a movie to watch and I will make chocolate chip cookies and provide drinks. I have no information on any allergies so, if your child cannot have chocolate chip cookies or Capri Sun fruit punch, please let me know.
Have a great week and Happy St. Patrick's Day!
