This week is the end of the 3rd Marking Period. Your 1st grader is almost in 2nd grade!
This week we will be working the long o sound found in "o_e" as in "spoke". We will also be deiscussing desribing words that use the endings - er and -est. Our reading comprehension strategy is drawing conclusions for our stories. If we know a few things about a character we can draw conclusions about him or her. (If he says Aargh, matey" and he has a hook, a peg leg and an eye patch we can conclude that the character is a pirate.)
I will be assessing students on their fluency, students should be reading around 45 words correct per minute with few errors. They should also be able to tell me a few sentences about what the story was about.
In writing, we will be writing to a prompt about places we might like to go. Student writing will be scored according to a rubric.
Level Criteria
4 The Student:
· Includes all aspects of “3” plus:
· Uses varied word choices within sentences.
· Utilizes more complex sentence structure.
· Responds to a task with a beginning, middle, and end.
· Uses transition words to make the story flow.
3 The Student:
· Stays on topic given by the teacher.
· Consistently uses correct sentence structure. (spacing, punctuation, and capitalization)
· Writes neatly.
· Usually spells word wall words correctly with minor editing.
· Attempts to use a variety of sentence structures and transition words.
· Writes assigned number of sentences or more.
2 The Student:
· Sometimes uses correct sentence structure.
· May have correct sentence structure but incorrect content.
· Sometimes spells word wall words correctly with minor editing.
· Does not write appropriate number of sentences.
· Does not write neatly.
1 The Student:
· Made an attempt to complete the assignment, however, there may be problems with the following:
spacing, punctuation, capitalization, content, inventive spelling (does not include beginning and ending sound), and handwriting.
In Math we are working on combinations of 2 addends to make a number. Your student should become familiar with number sentences (equations) written as such: 5+7=12, 12=5+7 AND 5+7=6+6. They should also be familiar with problems such as: Larry had 12 cookies. He ate some and now he has 8 cookies. How many cookies did he eat? (12-___=8). Students should understand that they can subtract 8 from 12 to find the answer. This is a complex idea for many 1st graders, many will add 8 to 12 and come up with 20.
In Social Studies, we will continue with Map skills, including the cardinal directions.
