I counted on our district calendar and last Friday was our 89th day of school and we have 89 more to go! This Friday is the last day of the 3rd Marking Period.
This week we will be doing an Oral Reading Fluency assessment using an appropriate 1st grade mid year text. To meet proficiency students must read 40 or more correct words per minute. We will also be reading our 3rd Marking Period High Frequency Words. Students will have 2 seconds to read each word, there are 44 words on our list (see under "More" for a copy of the list or check your child's folder on Tuesday).
In Reading, we are on lesson 18. We will be working on our long o sound as in "boat" and "slow". We will also discuss the author's purpose for writing a story, entertaining us or informing us and we will learn about making inferences when we read. Inferences are when we use what we already know to figure out something that the author doesn't tell us. If we are reading a story set during a snowstorm, we already know that it is cold, even if the author doesn't say so. On Friday we will have our end of Unit assessment and, if time allows, we will do a sequencing activity using Jan Brett's The Mitten. I hope to have pictures of the activity online next week!
In Math, we are finishing our unit on sorting and data assessment. We will have an end of Unit assessment on Thursday or Friday. We will sort buttons and analyze data from a survey. Yes, the end of the Marking Period brings many assessments, the good thing is that the assessments are not very long.
In Writing, we will write a letter to a friend and then, as a class, we will compose a letter to a Peace Corps volunteer that our class will correspond with throughout the rest of the year. Our volunteer is a recent college graduate from Georgia who is now teaching English in a high school in Maputo Mozambique.
In Science, we will continue our studies of the properties of solids and liquids.
On Wednesday, January 19 there is a PTA fundraiser at the Red Robin restaurant in People's Plaza in Glascow. You should have received a flyer in your child's folder, last week. My family and I are planning to attend around 5:30. I hope to see you there!
On Friday, January 21 we have "crazy hair day". (Unfortunately, according to Mrs. Howell, everyday is crazy hair day for me!) Your child is welcome to come to school with a crazy/colorful hairdo!
Also, on Friday, your student's musical instrument project is due for Mrs. Acero, our music teacher.
