After many enjoyable years in first grade, I decided it was time for a new challenge... I will be teaching 5th Grade ELA and Social Studies as part of Wilbur Elementary's Spanish Immersion Program. I look forward to working with Sra. Williams to prepare our students as they navigate our ever changing world!
Wow, what a day! We found our classroom, found our desks, and put our supplies away. We had special with Mr. Poindexter, did a little Math, heard a few stories and wrote about how we felt on the first day of school (I was nervous and excited). We practiced cutting with scissors, wrote some numbers had lunch and even had some out side recess!!
Tomorrow we will do it all again!! In late July, Mrs. Ostheimer and I were lucky enough to travel to Southeast Alaska with Lindblad Expeditions on the National Geographic Sea Bird. We learned about glaciers, humpback whales, steller sea lions, and sea otters. We hiked among majestic Sitka spruce and western hemlocks and viewed magical landscapes. See About Mr. Ostheimer for photos.
This past week, Mr. Parrett, Mrs. Ostheimer, and I took part in a professional development created by Jon Cox for DTI and ACEER at Stroud Water Research in PA and the Lenape Tribal Lands in Cheswold DE. We learned about macro-invertebrates and how they let us know about stream health (Just like in Zooey and Sassafras - Merhorses and Bubbles) from Tara at Stroud. We also learned some Lenape Indigenous Wisdom about their history and their land from Chief Coker and Miss Ruthie and the uses of indigenous plants from ACEER former director Roger. We learned how to assemble and use Foldscope microscopes from Jamie and how to set camera traps from Brian. Much of this knowledge will be useful as we create lessons that Bring the Amazon Home to our classrooms. Next summer, the DTI fellows will have the opportunity to experience the Amazon Rainforest with an expedition to indigenous lands in Peru!
Nat Geo Education tweeted about my Where in the World Wednesday routine. Check it out!
