This is the last week of the first marking period. Report cards will be mailed next week and we will have conferences in November, details will follow. This week, students will be assessed on their reading fluency, how many words in a grade appropriate text they can read correctly and with inflection in one minute. We are looking for 20 words plus per minute for a meets proficiency with 2 or less errors. This number will rise to 60 words per minute by the 4th marking period. Students are also assessed on their high frequency words from lessons 1 through 7 and every marking period more words will be added. In Math, we will be having an assessment on composing larger shapes with smaller shapes, how many different ways can one make a hexagon using smaller shapes?
In Science we will have our common assessment on weather and information for our weather project will be sent home. In Social Studies, classroom participation, understanding and adherence to school rules and displaying good school citizenship will factor into their grade.
The most difficult subject for most students is writing. For an MP, your child should be able to write 4 sentences on topic with proper use of capital letters, punctuation (most of the time) and spacing between words (all of the time). Legible handwriting is also a consideration as is proper spelling of short vowel words (cat, bed, dog, bug, etc.) and phonetic spelling of 2+ syllable words. I always remind students to use proper capitals and periods and to put spacing between words. This reminder does not always turn into practice.
The book fair is coming and our day will be Wednesday November 9 at 9:30. For those of you who ordered books from Scholastic, they have arrived and I will hand them out this week.
Our field trip is Friday November 4th.
Do you have some extra time? Would you like to cut out some manipulatives we use in the classroom? Let me know and I will send some home with your child.
Thanks!
Dave Ostheimer
