This week in ELA we will continue working on Main Idea and Details using "What Do You Do With a Tail Like That?" and other nonfiction selections. We will be working on fluency using our Harcourt story "The Van" which you can access on the Harcourt website under Library, Storytown Student Edition Book 1. We will also be reading some non-fiction selections. In Writing, we will working on a writing project about ourselves and practice the spelling of some of our Most Common Words. We will also learn the Tucker Signs for N, P, R and S as well as reviewing our earlier signs.
In Math, we will take our concepts of Greater Than, Less Than and Equal To and play a game called Double Compare. In this game we add two cards together and then compare the sum with the sum of two other cards. See the video under Math Videos for how to play. We will also begin learning how to solve story problems.
In Science we will become meteorologists, observing, recording and discussing the weather.
Remember, there is no school on Friday due to Professional Development therefore homework will be due Thursday. Please have your child attempt all of the assignments including the writing. Writing is a big component on how your child will be assessed from 1st grade through college and they need all the practice they can get! Make sure they are sounding out words, writing legibly and putting spaces between their words. As for punctuation, it doesn't always go at the end of a line but goes where their thought ends. Does their sentence make sense? Did they write everything they wanted to? Have them read it back to you and fix any mistakes.
Are you filling out your reading log? Please, only one book per day on the log (although you are welcome to read as many books as you would like). The log rewards students for reading everyday, not for binge reading on Monday and then not reading the rest of the week.
Don't forget to check the Facebook page for classroom action shots!
Have a great week!
