Dear Parents/Guardians,
This week we have a full 5 day week!! In Language Arts, we will work on words with the short i sound as in "big". Students will begin working in small groups, reading leveled readers, working with words in centers and completing assignments on our classroom computers. I am almost finished assessing individuals on their knowledge of the Dolch word lists for pre-primer and primer. If necessary, you will be receiving flashcards in the next week or two of words that your child had problems with. We will work on those words individually in the classroom but any additional work at home that you are able to do will benefit your child immensely. For those who are fluent in the initial words, I will be sending home 1st and/or 2nd grade word lists for them to become familiar with. The more words your child has in the bank the more complex and interesting books they will be able to read.
Speaking of reading, your child is welcome to bring home a book or two from my library every night. I ask that they take only one or two a night because I am having a problem with students taking all the books in a certain series and not leaving choices for others. If they forget to return the book, I ask that they not take another until it is returned.
In Math we continue with our Unit on geometry and, if all goes according to plan, we will have our end of unit assessment on Friday. This week we will concentrate on using more and less shapes to construct a figure and also on sorting shapes by attributes. You can practice sorting at home by having students sort clothes, toys or household items by shapes, colors or functions.
In Science we continue with our weather unit, concentrating on thermometers and their uses.
In our read a loud we will find out what happens when Jack and Annie meet the mysterious knight in our Magic Tree House chapter book and then move on to the next book in the series.
Monday is the last day to bring in orders or order on line from Scholastic Books September catalogs. Please click on the 'Book Order" tab at the top of the page to order online.
Thank you and I look forward to a great week!
Dave Ostheimer
