I'll be at a technology professional development seminar on Thursday and Friday so we will have a substitute in the room. I hope to have some new cool ideas to add to the classroom or maybe to this site!
We have been working hard since I last wrote. We have taken our Unit 1 Assessment in Language Arts which I will share with you at conferences in November. This week we learned our l-blends and r-blends and 10 more Most Common Words bringing our total to 60. We talked about retelling a story with beginning, middle and end and we did some more descriptive writing. Next week we will work on s-blends and continue working on our retelling skills.
In Math we took a shape walk on the playground to find hexagons, trapezoids, rhombuses, squares, rectangles and triangles. We discussed what a vertex is and how many vertices and sides shapes have. We did an assessment on how many ways we can make a hexagon using other shapes and we continued with addition and word problems. Next week we will be wrapping up our Unit on Geometry.
In Science we were introduced to cumulus, stratus and cirrus clouds and will continue our study of clouds next week. Next week, Mrs. Aldas and I are trying to set up a Skype session about the Rainforest with a group of researchers. I hope that this opportunity will pan out.
As I will not be here on Thursday and Friday, please do not send in field trip forms and payment until Monday. Remember, they are do by Weds. 10/30.
Next Thursday, 10/31, is Storybook Character Day and Grandparent Day. Students and teachers will dress as their favorite characters. Did you know that Disney princesses and superheroes are featured in books? Well they are, so just about any costume fits the bill. Remember if the character happens to have some sort of weapon in the story your child is not allowed to bring it to school. Even Captain Hook has to leave his hook at home. Grandparents can come in until 1:00 (they do not need to wear a costume) and see what goes on on school. I will have some things for them to do if they feel like helping out. Any retired librarians out there? Our bookshelves are a mess!
Finally our 1st Marking Period is ending this week. You should be receiving report cards in a few weeks.
Let me know if any grandparents are coming on 10/31.
